The Challenge Guidelines

First Task- Maneuvering (steering through  a series of hoops)
Time limit: 3 minutes maximum
If less than 3 minutes:
1st place: 3 points
2nd place:2 points
3rd place: 1 point
How this relates to the real world: There are a multitude of obstacles (coral, etc) that a real ROV must navigate to complete it’s given objectives.

Second Task- Coral reef restoration
Time limit: 4 minutes
1 point is given for every coral specimen successfully moved to the correct area.
How this relates to Marine Science: In the real world, ROV’s are routinely used to repair reefs around the world (however, due to time and money, ROV use is limited because of resources, as well as the fact that because of cost, repairing reefs via ROV’s will be patchy and inconsistent globally.
-ROV should be relatively lightweight (propeller’s shouldn't weigh too much, so we can boost efficiency by carrying the maximum number of coral at once).

Third Task-Specimen Collection
Time limit-4 minutes
2 points are given for every “schworoctopuse” successfully moved to the correct area.
How this relates to Marine Science: ROV’S often collect biological samples from the depths of the ocean; there are two ROV’s used for this practice: The Suction Sampler (sucks up zooplankton) and the “D” Sampler (collects the most fragile detrital specimens).
-Just like with coral reef restoration, our ROV should be as light as possible to accommodate moving the maximum number of specimens in the shortest amounts of time.

Fourth Task- Oil Repair
Time limit- 3 minutes
10 points are given if you cap the leaking pipe correctly.
How this relates to Marine Science: In the real world, there are many “accidental” oil spills that have occurred in many parts of our oceans. They affect our marine life very badly and is extremely hard to remove from our oceans. Recently, ROV’s have been used to combat this extremely relevent issue: In 2010, ROV’s were used to insert the “Riser Insertion Tube Tool”, which, when in use, was capturing 2,000 barrels of oil per day that would have been leaked into the ocean.

Thoughts and Observations About the tasks:
Overall the tasks seem like a challenge but our team will work hard to complete all the tasks the best of our ability. The task for maneuvering will be the easiest task for points that our team will try to accomplish since it is going to test whether our ROV works. Since the oil repair is going to give us the most points if we complete it correctly, our team will plan in advance to tackle this challenge by testing this task the most to earn those 10 points! Finally, the collecting specimen task will be our second priority because the more specimen we collect, the more points we get!
